About us

Our Center is one of the oldest educational institutions for the deaf children in Poland. It was founded on the ninth September 1915 as Christian School for the Deaf.

We specialize in work with pupils with different degrees of hearing loss, aphasia, deaf schoolchildren with special educational needs who have been diagnosed with additional disorders and deficits. Our primary aim is well-being of the pupil and comprehensive development, ensuring equal educational opportunities ,preparation for active and valuable life. The Center achieves educational, preventive, caring, therapeutic and rehabilitation aims.

The Center consists of:

  • Early Development Support Unit,
  • Nursery School,
  • Primary School,
  • Boarding School.
  • Pupils, like their peers at public schools, follow curricula and the core curriculum for a given educational stage.
  • We provide education to children from Lodz and the entire Lodz voivodeship.
  • We provide nurse care for children five days a week.

Highly qualified and experienced staff ,ensuring the quality of education appropriate to the needs of children, pedagogical, psychological and revalidation care ,is employed. There are Deaf and impaired hearing people among teachers. We have graduates of our school in the staff. Lessons are conducted in both phonic and sign language depending on child’s needs.

The school staff consists of:

  • speech therapists/surdotherapists/neurologists
  • sign language interpreter
  • and other specialists.

Our teachers, due to their experience and qualifications, are experts in inclusive education of the Education Development Centre, experts in Central Education Committee, lecturers at the universities, Librus company trainers, authors of textbooks, scientific and popular science publications, educators, drama instructors, Polish Sign Language interpreters, sports coaches, authors and coordinators of EFS projects.

We accept students’ internships of pedagogical faculties from all over Poland, for those, who want to know methods of teaching deaf, impaired hearing and aphasia children. Not only do we take part in scientific conferences but also we organize them, too.

We have been actively participating in the Erasmus+ project for many years in which our students and teachers take part in international school exchange. We have recently received accreditation in the education sector as a part of the action 1 Erasmus +Program for years 2021-2027.Moreover,we have implemented and continue to implement many projects under EFS thanks to which we have enriched the offer of classes, bought many teaching aids, multimedia equipment to classrooms and teachers have taken part in numerous trainings and courses that raised their competences and qualifications for work with deaf and aphasia children.

Early Development Support Unit

Within early development support we take care of the children from birth to the first grade of primary school. In order for a child to be included in the early development support unit classes, she/he must have an opinion about the need for early development support issued by the assessment team of a public psychological and pedagogical counseling center. We take care of children with hearing ,speech ,language communication problems, children with cochlear implantation. We also offer therapeutic classes for children with multiple disabilities. Participation in early development support unit classes is free of charge.

Within early development support classes are organized from four to eight hours a month. They are conducted individually with a child and her/his family.

Early Development Support Unit consists of therapists specializing in work with little children with impaired speech and hearing development: surdopedagogues, speech therapists, neurologists, sensory integration therapist, rehabilitation specialist. Classes are run in very well equipped speech therapy, therapeutic, Snoezelen, Sensory Integration offices. A team of specialists prepares a therapy plan selecting exercises individually focused on hearing, speech and communication development. Pedagogical and psychological consultations are also run within early development support.

Nursery school

We accept to our nursery school children with hearing impairment and aphasia type speech disorders, having current opinion about the need of special education. We accept children from 3 to 6 years old. Education at our nursery school can be stretched to the age of nine. Classes are run in small groups ( 6-8 children) ,focused on communication competence development. Methods of communication are adapted to a child’s needs ( phonic speech, sign language, supportive and alternative methods of communication AAC).Nursery groups are formed depending on children’s needs and their level of functioning. Children are taught in spacious, classrooms well adapted to their needs, very well equipped in multimedia equipment and numerous teaching aids. Nursery school teachers are highly qualified specialist who have a broad knowledge and skills necessary to work with children with aphasia, hearing impairment and accompanying disorders.

Children stay in friendly atmosphere full of acceptance ,respect, mutual kindness and safety. Nursery school children, participating in everyday life of nursery school ,develop the ability of effective communication, school and social skills. Every nursery school child can use a wide offer of educational and therapeutic classes such as: speech therapy, sensory integration therapy, corrective gymnastics, logarithmics, English, auditory training. Moreover, children are covered by extra activities within early development support and psychological -pedagogical support. At the end of their education, children receive a reliable diagnosis and assessment of school maturity with particular emphasis on communication competences .A child has the opportunity to continue learning at our primary school.

Nursery school operates form 7.00-17.00.

Primary School

Our school has nice and friendly atmosphere. Pupils learn in classrooms equipped with modern teaching aids and multimedia and audiovisual device. All classrooms are equipped with interactive monitors. The school implements the principles of inclusive education with children with hearing disabilities and aphasia in mind. We prepare our schoolchildren to communicate with both hearing and deaf people. Deaf and hearing children integrate very well. Pupils receive free textbooks. Teachers are supported in their daily work by pedagogue and psychologist. A systematic psychological and pedagogical diagnosis is conducted.

Pupils, like their peers at public schools ,follow curricula and the core curriculum of public schools for a given educational stage. We teach independence ,tolerance and responsibility.

We offer children at our school:

  • education in small groups ( 4-8 people)
  • lessons in phonetic language and sign language
  • revalidation/therapeutic activities in accordance with individual therapeutic and developmental program
  • learning sign language
  • care of psychologist, pedagogue ,rehabilitator
  • participation in going to the theatre, cinema, museum lessons, classes in cultural centers, trips, competitions, sports competitions, Olympics and other events.

Apart from lessons students use numerous forms of therapy and benefit from revalidation classes, among others:

  • speech therapy,
  • EEG-biofeedback therapy,
  • Tomatis therapy,
  • Johansen therapy,
  • individual auditory trainings,
  • didactic and compensation classes,
  • corrective and logarithmic classes,
  • Veronica Sherborne’s development movement,
  • and other depending on child’s needs.

Pupils participate also in after class activities during which they can develop their own interests and talents: sport, art, drama, language, Maths etc.

After school, children waiting for their parents, can actively and safely spend this time in school common room. Time spent in the common room is also extension of the didactic and educational process carried out during classes. Supervising teachers support and complete work of the school by conducting additional classes expanding students’ knowledge, broadening their interests and creative thinking, supporting social and moral development.

Working hours of the common room: from Monday to Friday from 7.00-17.00.

The boarding school

The boarding school is responsible for care of children who do not live in Lodz. Friendly and kind staff, highly experienced in work with deaf, aphasia and special educational needs children, take care 24/7.All teachers graduated from pedagogy faculty, they are surdopedagogues, oligophrenopedagogues, they improve their qualifications during courses and trainings. They try to create home atmosphere so as to spend time in nice and family environment. They help children to discover their own talents ,equalize educational opportunities, gain knowledge and skills enabling to meet educational challenges, waiting for them, in their adult life. They provide proper conditions for complex development, learning, fun, recreation and leisure. All teachers communicate both in phonic and sign languages, depending on children’s needs. All children are under psychologist and pedagogue care.

During stay at boarding school pupils can use:

  • common room equipped with home cinema ,games and toys for younger children and older ones,
  • computer laboratory with internet access,
  • kitchen fully equipped with household items,
  • school gym, but also pitch, garden with playground.

Our pupils have opportunity to develop and discover their own passions within ,for example:

  • art classes and art workshops,
  • craftsmanship,
  • cooking classes,
  • sports activities and trainings conducted by the representative of the Polish team of the Deaf,
  • compensatory and corrective classes,
  • and others depending on children’s needs and interests.

Apart from classes at the boarding school, teachers organize trips to interesting exhibitions, to cinema, theatre and constant events organized in Lodz, bike trips, sightseeing tours.

Stay at the boarding school and all classes are free of charge. The fee covers food only for every day of stay at boarding school and it is payable by the tenth day of each month ,in advance for all month. Accounting for unused meals by a child due to absence is made every subsequent month.
